Recently, within a historic building that embodies two centuries of British cultural heritage, Mr. Yang Bangsheng introduced the new English edition of his book 'Constructing Living Realms', opening a profound dialogue bridging East and West. More than a book launch, the occasion marked a confident expression of Chinese design on the global stage.
Beneath the classical dome of 6 Bedford Square, leaders from the Royal Institute of British Architects, representatives from leading British architectural firms including Foster + Partners and Heatherwick Studio, as well as scholars from renowned London art institutions, gathered to witness the formal debut of this work, which distils thirty years of Mr. Yang Bangsheng’s design philosophy and practice.
'Constructing Living Realms' is far more than a conventional collection of projects. It systematically articulates Mr. Yang Bangsheng's Eastern design philosophy through four interconnected dimensions: Sheng—origin, growth and continuity; Xi—restraint, stillness and rhythm; Jing—intention, locality and spirit; and Gou—materiality, scale and construction.
In London, the birthplace of modern design, a distinctive dialogue between East and West unfolded. Mr. Yang Bangsheng engaged in an insightful discussion on key issues shaping urban development with Prof. Darren Woolf, Chair of the CIBSE Resilient Cities Group, Richard Black, Senior Associate at RSHP, and Dr. Nicolas Palominos, an urban researcher specialising in geocomputation and urban analytics at University College London.
